National House Prostějov

History of the National House

Prostějov has always been a town with rich cultural tradition. Its citizens had the chance to see the best that the so called “off the center” theater could offer. The conditions were rather modest and so it is only sound that the first instigation to build a reasonable theater building has arisen from this environment. In 1892, a real effort to build a theater building has started.
Arch. Kotěra sent the first blueprint of the future National House in March 1905 and the foundation stone was laid down on 24th of May 1906. Construction works proceeded very fast and the opening of the National House took place at the end of 1907. Arch. Jan Kotěra has created a, for Czech Republic in its time, absolutely unique theatrical ground, which has not been exceeded for more than 30 years. Many significant Czech artists invited by Kotěra have also partaken on the art statement; fore example: painters Jan Preisler and František Kysela and sculptors Stanislav Sucharda, Bohumil Kafka and Karel Petr.
We have the opportunity to admire Kotěra’s house until today; however, it would deserve to be at least partly restored to the original shape. Let’s be pleased at least about the partial yet fundamental reparations, which thanks to the town’s funding mainly, give the house its original magnificence and function back, and which also enable rich and various cultural and social life in the town of Prostějov.
